Territory Sales Manager Tim Lovell from Pioneer Seeds visited Craig Reynolds at his farm near Congupna VIC to discuss his experiences growing the new short season corn hybrid P9978 and his plans for the upcoming season.
Craig planted approximately 400 hectares of corn in the summer season, rotated with their winter crops, including canola, wheat, hay, and faba beans. In 2024 they trialled the corn hybrid P9978 alongside P0937 and another earlier generation hybrid.
Craig highlighted their goal of averaging over 14 tonnes per hectare for corn, with earlier sown crops aiming for 15 to 17 tonnes per hectare. He mentioned the challenges of double cropping after canola, which can reduce yields. P9978 is set to replace the earlier generation P9911 in their rotation, offering improved performance and flexibility.
For over a decade Craig has hosted STRIKE (Seed Technology Research In Key Environments) trials on his farm and praises the program for the insight it gives him into the performance of key hybrids, helping inform him on which would deliver the optimal performance on his farm. He especially appreciates that he can review the long-term data of earlier generation hybrids and the exclusive insights into new and upcoming hybrids.
Craig and Tim also touched on the importance of timing in planting and harvesting, with a preference for completing planting before December and harvesting from mid-April to May. Craig emphasized the role of their grain dryer in managing harvest timing and ensuring crop quality.
Overall, the Reynolds Family Farming operation showcases strategic crop management and the benefits of adopting new corn hybrids to enhance yield and efficiency.
