Pioneer® supports Geurie sportsground repairs

Picnic race days remain a feature of many Australian rural communities, often the biggest social event of the year.

Pioneer Seeds helped make the Geurie Picnic Day a reality this year. Pioneer Seeds helped make the Geurie Picnic Day a reality this year.

They are an occasion for hardworking country people to get together, share a laugh and catch up with friends.

In former days, nearly every small town had its own racecourse and race meeting schedule.

However, a challenge for communities who want to continue to host race days has become the cost of maintaining the facilities needed, so fewer meets are now held throughout the country.

One community keen to continue the tradition of race days is Geurie – about an hour east of Narromine in the NSW central west – where Pioneer Seeds is supported by several world-class seed production growers with strong links to the township.

The growers produce hybrid seed for broadacre farmers throughout Australia and are part of a community that maintains the tradition of race meets at their local sports ground.

Pioneer® Seeds Field Production Operations Manager Luke Brown says the Pioneer Seeds production agronomy team appreciates the efforts of seed production growers, many of whom go above-and-beyond, to ensure quality planting seed is produced for Aussie farmers.

"We want to do something for their communities in acknowledgement of all the support these farmers give to Pioneer Seeds, and so we’ve made a small donation to the Geurie sports ground committee to assist with the upkeep of the grounds,” he says.

Geurie Picnic Race Club committee member Ross Paxton says profits generated from race meets helped with the sportsground’s maintenance, which in turn, benefited user groups in the community throughout the year.

A prominent and active member of the community, Pioneer Seeds regularly assists organisations and individuals undertaking a range of activities and events.

Pioneer supports many regional sporting clubs, community crops and fund-raising initiatives, helping thousands of rural Australians every year.
